Meet the Team

The Club is run and managed by the following people:

Pat Sutcliffe (ECF coach)
(founder and chess coach)


The Club was established and is run by Pat Sutcliffe, an Accredited English Chess Federation (ECF) Coach. One of only two in North Yorkshire. Pat, a trained teacher and keen chess player, is the main coach at the Club and conducts a coaching session each week before game play begins.  Pat also teaches chess at two schools in the area, Oatlands Infants and Oatlands Junior. An adult ‘Back to Chess’ group is also being set up and will be run by Pat during the daytime. There will be more information on this in the near future.  Pat holds an enhanced DBS certificate with the ECF.

John Sutcliffe
(administrator and learner’s coach)


John takes an active part in the running of the Club, handling the administrative side, dealing with membership and welcoming members into the Club. He is also the first person parents come into contact with. In addition to his administrative role, John also takes on a coaching role in the Club concentrating on the more inexperienced players. John uses patience and skill to build up the confidence of new players.

Andrew ZigmondBlackpool
(support coach)

Andrew has played chess since a youth and was, himself, a Junior Champion. He is also Controller of the National County Championships and Controller of the Yorkshire Chess Association league?  His contribution to the Club is invaluable. Andrew takes care of the Club’s pairings during competitions as well as supporting players through his in-depth knowledge of the game. Andrew can be found at the Club most Wednesday’s working alongside Pat to provide a fulfilling experience for the members.  Andrew is fully DBS certified.
